We pride ourselves in helping each student achieve their goals and developing their mental and physical strength. This is what attaining a Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do Black Belt requires.
For some of our candidates this journey to Black Belt began in our Knee High Ninja Program, when they were only four years old!
This month, these candidates passed our Arlington Qualifier and the Panel Exam in front of the Jhoon Rhee Masters from Arlington and Falls Church. Our candidates persevered and we would like to present and congratulate our newest Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do Black Belts!

“Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do has played a part in my grades going up, i was always a good student until 8th came along and i underestimated the workload. I finished middle school with a B or C average which made both me and my parents unhappy. Once I began high school in August of last year my grades improved significantly, Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do taught me self discipline to study at home and improve my grades. When I first started Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do I loved it and looked forward to every class as i went to (according to my parents) . I don’t remember much from when I was little but I do know that Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do helped me stay out of trouble and learn respect. Now I have learned how to share what I have learned with kids by helping with classes and I have learned to adapt to different personalities, I have learned to get places early, and finish things I have started along with many different things.”

“Growing up, I severely lacked confidence. I would never put myself out there or take a chance because I was always afraid that I would do something wrong. I always thought I wasn’t smart enough, or fast enough, or even just good enough. Because of Tae Kwon Do, I have gained confidence. When I was in 6th grade, I went to a completely new school where I did not know anybody. Through the confidence Tae Kwon Do gave me, I was able to introduce myself to new people and make new friends. I have learned that through hard work and dedication I can do anything I put my mind to.”

“….when I arrived at James Madison University, there were zero instructors teaching the Jhoon Rhee style. Currently, every instructor is teaching the Jhoon Rhee style, and the President (myself) and Vice President are both black belts in the Jhoon Rhee system… I decided to host an in-house tournament and opened it to all members of the club. …The day of the tournament arrived and for the most part, everything ran smoothly. We sold some concessions, everyone got feedback on their forms, and all four divisions had a different victor….While I do consider the tournament a success, it was also a learning opportunity. In addition to the tournament, I helped refine our self-defense seminars with sororities, instituted a mandatory community service requirement for members, and I am in the process of coordinating with a local elementary school to bring an after school tae kwon do program taught by members of our club. I am hoping that the tournament becomes an annual tradition that outlasts me in JMU Club Taekwondo. Last semester, I obtained straight A’s and I will be entering my third year at James Madison University.”

“Fifteen years ago, I was walking through the hallways of the Lee Harrison Shopping Center. Bagel in hand, I watched parts of the Tae Kwon Do class through the window with my parents. I don’t remember what I watched, but I recall clearly how my dad asked if this was something I wanted to do. Of course, at age five, I had no way of knowing just how much Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do would change my life; but it didn’t take me long to realize that this would be more than just an activity for me. With the help of Master Hawk and Mr. Shackelford, I organized three competition workshops for students Orange Belt and higher who were interested in attending the Super Challenge Tournament….I have always jumped on opportunities to give back. I realize now, however, that the core of all my contributions is a reflection of the best thing Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do has done for me. For as long as I’ve been able to call the studio a second home, and its community a second family, Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do has empowered me to be the best version of myself. And so, as I give back to the community that has given me so much, I want my contribution to be leaving a legacy that has empowered the next generation of students. None of my contributions to Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do would have been possible without the village of people around me who have provided their unconditional love and support.”
